1- What problems do you have in your surrounding?

2- How you show that you care about your surrounding?

3- Give suggestions help in solving the mentioned problems?

Answer from LC1 Wolfert Lyceum

One of the problems in our country, according to some but definately not all of the people in the Netherlands, are illegal immigrants. We have special housing set up to give the immigrants a shelter. To build these houses we pay taxes to the Government. Illegal immigrants who live longer than 5 years may stay in Netherlands.

Noise pollution is sometimes a problem in our small country. In our village we have a high speed train line. We can build high wals around the high speed line to contain the noise. There is also noise from airplanes but we can’t do much about that.

In cities littering is a problem. There are garbage containers but they are often full. In our school we also litter but after every break we have to clean it up ourselves.

Traffic jams are a bit of a problem, especially in the west of the country. We try not to use our cars and go by bike. This is better for ourselves and for the environment and atmosphere.

What problems do you have in your surroundings?

Some of the problems in our community are:  littering, vandalism, bullying, criminals, break-ins, and global warming.

How do you show you care about your surroundings?

We care about our community by using solar panels, not throwing garbage around, keeping our streets clean.  We reduce, reuse and recycle.  We do many anti-bullying programs at our school.

Give suggestions to help in solving the mentioned problems.

To solve these problems we are going to report any suspicious actions to the police.  We will recycle more and turn off  the lights when we are not using them.  We report any bullying to adults.  We are trying to stop pollution and save trees.

As a school project, we created a banner to illustrate all the positive ways we can help our community through our actions and attitudes.  This banner explains our surroundings very well!

There are many problems in our county, such as environment problems, low birth rate, more and more aging people. Taiwan’s birth rate falls to the world’s lowest, which means that the future population may gradually become less. It will have a significant impact on all aspects of our social structure. By the way, medical technology is getting better, so senior citizen’s death rate is getting lower. These two reasons cause Taiwan have problems of aging population. We cannot solve all the problems, but we still can do something, in particular our environment problems. Climate change has caused a lot of serious damage in our life. To help resolve the problem, what we can do in our everyday life is do recycling. We do recycling at school, at home, and in public places. Trash cans for recycling are easily found. We recycle plastic bottles, batteries, glass, used paper, cans, etc. At the school, we do cleaning work three times a day. As cleaning, recycled materials are collected and sent to the recycling room. Then these items will be sent to factories to make goods. We even recycle lunch leftover, which is used to feed pigs. My school has a special competition for recycling used batteries. The class who recycle the most used batteries will get a prize.

There are still a lot to do to make our surrounding better. Our suggestions are as follows.

1. Don’t buy too many things. Usually do three Rs—reduce, reuse, and recycle.

2. Take public transportation, ride a bike, or walk more.

3. Use more alternative energy, like wind power and solar power.

4. Buy more local food from local farmers. That will reduce the use of fuel.

5. Use a fan instead of an air conditioner to reduce carbon emission.

(1)               What problems do you have in your surrounding?

Seven days a week we have traffic jams in our country because there are so many people driving a car in such a small country. The traffic jams are mostly around the time that people go to work or go home from their work. The traffic jams are the biggest in the 'Randstad'. That are the biggest cities together in the Netherlands and the name for all the cities together is Randstad. A traffic jam is when many cars are behind each other in a very long line. They don't drive and if they drive, they drive very slowly. Due to that we have so many cars in our countries our environment is polluted. All cars leave behind exhaust and that damages our environment.

One of the main problems in our surroundings is pollution. Near our school there’s always a lot of waste at the roadside, because teenagers often buy chips and energy drinks at the local supermarkets and throw their waste away while they are on their way home.

(2)  How you show that you care about your surrounding?

We like to help people with things where they need help. We also should send them a card when something happens, when someone is having his / her birthday or when someone has died.

We have showed that we care about our surrounding because last year we cleaned the road sides with all the first classes.

(3) Give suggestions  help in solving the mentioned problems?

We're already busy with making new road systems and the whole world is busy with making cars driving on electricity. When these road systems are ready, there will be less traffic jams. And when more and more people are using electricity cars, the environment will be much better!

Our suggestions helping in solving the mentioned problems:

–                  Teach at school what happens if too much waste is thrown away and not cleaned up.

–                  There should be a day that all the students clean up the area around their school.

Answer from LC6 Morning Star School Ltd:

Here in Ghana, there are a lot of problems, these include:-poor sanitation, lack of health equipment in many hospitals.

To begin with, the dreadful nature most Ghanaians have taken to in disposing of waste is a problem that needs to be tackled. People in our community have taken to disposing off waste poorly and improperly. They do this by throwing waste into rivers, roads, and in drainage systems. Despite the existence of many laws against the littering of our society, most people have still gone ahead to litter our environment. This problem is a contribution of the floods and diseases we have been encountering in our community.

In our health sector, the lack of poor health facilities have quickened many deaths, which has led to the loss of many lives which could have contributed to the loss of Human Resources.

In order to show we care about our surroundings we the pupils of the Morning Star School organize clean-up activities to help in the cleaning of our edifice this we do once every year.

In our opinion, we think the following measures should be taken by the Law Enforcement agencies and the government to help in the elimination of some of these problems:

  • ·         Firstly, the government should organize Educational campaigns to educate the people about the harm they cause to the environment every time they litter. We would also like to suggest that the Law enforcement agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, intensify their work in the protection of our environment.
  • ·         Also, the government should provide the country with the required health equipments to help in the treatment of most of the sick people in our community.

Thank you.

Answer from LC7 Herbert H. Carnegie Public School, Patrice and Natalie:

We interpreted "surroundings" to  mean our school environment, and rather than look at the environmental issues, we looked at the social problems we have in our environment.  Because of this, we skipped the second question and moved right on to the third one.  Hope you don't mind!

Part 1:  What problems do you have in your surroundings?

The major problems we have in our surroundings are:

1. Bullying in the Intermediate grades:  We find that Grade 7 to 12 students are intimidating other students physically, emotionally and over the Internet.  The last form is called cyberbullying, and because of social media like Facebook and Twitter, it has become a huge issue!  Suicide rates are up and a lot of kids are cyberbullying because they think that they are anonymous and won't get caught, but they are wrong!

2.  No school teams, clubs and extra sports because our teachers are protesting changes that the government has made to their work contracts by refusing to do extra work such as running teams and clubs.  See the videos/ articles attached for full details and two different points of view on the issue.

http://www.therecord.com/news/local/article/800147--kitchener-father-outraged-as-teachers-protests-continue

OUR RESEARCH:

We surveyed our Grade 6, 7 and 8 students about which of these two issues is most important to them, and while most thought that the loss of teams and clubs was the worse of the two, the older kids (Grade 8s) saw bullying to be more of an issue than the younger Grade 6s and 7s.  Maybe this is because the Grade 8s have more personal technologies and the 6s and 7s have limited access to Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

Part 3:  Give suggestions to help in solving the mentioned problems:

To stop the loss of our clubs and sports teams, we could:

1. Protest by writing the government about how having no extracurricular activities are affecting us socially, physically and emotionally.

2. Encourage the teachers to think about us and urge them to come up with another strategy that does not put Innocent studnets in the middle of their argument with the government.

3.  Start our own teams and clubs after school and/ask our parents to run these teams.

4. Elect a new provincial government that respects the teacher's rights to negotiate a contract that is fair.

5.  Run clubs and teams during class time.  For example, have a special day when the time that would have been used for Math could be devoted to basketball and students could participate in the club of their choice.  We could call it an Electives or Club Day.

Answer from LC9 Nellie McClung P.S., Tracy and Nicole:

1- What problems do you have in your surrounding?

Problems at our school:

The problems that we have at school are that we don’t have a playground therefore we have less physical activities to chose from. So many kids always walk around bored. Another problem at school is that everyone litters too much and this causes pollution.

Problems in the Vaughan Community:

The problem in the Vaughan Community are that people with disabilities and immigrants have shortage of employment opportunities. Also the public transit, which includes the buses and trains are not at their best.

2- How you show that you care about your surrounding?

We show we care about our school and our communities by not littering, biking and walking to school. As you can see, we don’t like to pollute.

We want to show that we care about the problems that is the fact that people who have disabilities and are immigrants have a shortage of employment opportunities by sending letters to the government so that they can see that we care about the problems and that we want to make a difference.

3- Give suggestions help in solving the mentioned problems?

How are we going to solve these problems? We will not litter, and we will be against bullying. For the Vaughan community problems, we will send letters to the public transit to figure out how we can solve these problems.
